The Bangkok Dark Green Line extension to the Southern side of the existing BTS “Sukhumvit Line” route is currently under construction. The extension was approved by the Cabinet on 27 November 2008 and the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) was the organisation designated by the Cabinet to oversee the project.
Current Status
The construction is reported to be at 63.92% completed (approximately 4.14% ahead of schedule). It is expected to be gradually in operation by 2019-2020. (Updated: September 2015)
Route Info
The Bearing – Samutprakarn Dark Green Line extension is going to be elevated heavy rail above the street level throughout the entire line. The total travel distance from the Bearing station to the new terminus in Samutprakarn is 13 km. The track would be running above the street isles of Sukhumvit Road, passing over Samrong canal, Teparak intersection, Puchaosamingprai intersection.
Once reaching where the Outer ring road intersects with the Sukhumvit road, the track would briefly shift to the Western side of the street in order to leave sufficient gap between the track and the ring road. Then, it would continue on above the street isles again all the way to the new terminus station at Power Substation Bang Ping where there would be a rail junction for trains to enter a new depot situated on the Western side of Sukhumvit.
Stations
There are 7 stations along the extension with a possibility of expanding to 2 additional station/stops. The station would be all elevated above the street level. Similarly to the existing BTS train stations, each station of the Bearing – Samutprakarn route would consist of three stories: ground, ticketing level, and train platform level. Each would be equipped with sufficient amenities and services for handicapped passengers including bathrooms and lifts. (Two canceled stations are: Navy School, Saiyuad)
Cost
The Bearing – Samutprakarn is expected to cost totaling 24,549 Million Baht (2007 prices).
Future Plans
The next phase of the Dark Green Line Southern extension would be from Kheha Samut Prakarn station all the way to Bang Pu. This phase of extension is expected to be in operation by 2029.
